Georgetown: A survey on the consumption of electronic cigarettes and vape among young individuals by the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) revealed that there is a high number of girls addicted to vape.

N.V. Subbarow, the CAP anti-tobacco crusader as well as education officer, stated that the survey also revealed that e-cigarette and vape usage among young people had increased twice in the past year.

Even though electronic cigarettes and vape were more popular, there was a lower perceived risk of harm, he stated.

According to Subbarow, most of the boys and girls were ignorant about the risks associated with what they were consuming. However, other young girls were of the opinion that electronic cigarettes or so called vape had nicotine.

He said that the survey showed that the number of shops dealing with the devices was on the rise, even in rural areas. Others offer installment schemes.

He stated that the majority of students and younger ladies interviewed were between ages 14 and 22 years old.

“The girls are mostly from private universities and they turned to vape because of the variety of flavors. We fear that these young people are now hooked on nicotine.”

Subbarow stated that CAP advised the Health Ministry to bring to an end the use of electronic cigarettes and vape as well as the issuance of licenses for those intending to start the e-cigarettes and vape devices business.

He added that there were a lot of roadside stalls dealing in the sales of e-cigarette and vape devices starting from even RM50. He said that CAP encouraged more health education campaigns to take place in schools, not forgetting universities.
