Australian schools are using new technology to conduct crackdowns on students who vape on the school premises.
Many educational institutes, including Melbourne’s Marymede College, have installed vape detector technology in bathrooms. According to the school principal, Timothy Newcomb, any student caught vaping will have to face the consequences.
Mr. Newcomb revealed concerns among the college community regarding vaping in students and society overall.
Vape detectors are playing a vital role in addressing teen vaping in schools and colleges. In addition, such equipment strongly supports the federal law of Tobacco 21.
According to the principal, the ventures of teen vaping have been reducing among the students after the school decided to install the vape detectors.
The vape detectors in the toilet blocks generate an email for selected school leaders with the exact location and time of the vape detection. Hence, the student responsible for breaking the law can be identified easily via video footage, and the whole emerging concern against teen vape can be addressed properly.
Looking at the use of vape detectors in Merymede College in Australia, other educational institutes can also take actions to implement such technology and address the issue of underage vaping.
Mr. Newcomb expressed his partial satisfaction with vape detectors and their relation to implementing the tobacco 21 law. However, he believes that with the technology, the school premises can be gradually swiped clean of vaping activities which will interrupt the road towards teen vape.
He further added that the efforts would only yield in lesser vaping activities inside the schools, and he cannot stop anything that happens outside the walls. But at least we can educate the students in school about the effects of teen vape and supervise their future behavior.
Educational institutes are the change engine of a country, and it is important that they are free of any violation of law. Students in premature age are easily attracted to products meant for the adults and teachers can play a vital role in educating them to understand the importance of age limit of certain products.
Initiatives like tobacco 21 can also motivate the invention of assistance devices like vape detectors and save the underage from indulging in unhealthy activities.
